Hoi An Tailors

How to get clothes made to measure

Hoi An has been a cloth-trading town for centuries and today has hundreds of tailor shops, able to make a suit, a dress or a copy of your favourite shirt in a day or two. The results range from superb to disappointing. A little planning makes all the difference.

How much time you need

A shop can sew a simple shirt or dress overnight, but good results come from two or three fittings. Plan on:

The golden rule: order on your first day, not your last. That leaves time for alterations and a final check before you pack.

How to order

  1. Bring a reference. Photos from several angles, or better, a garment you love that the tailor can copy and improve.
  2. Choose the fabric carefully. Feel it, ask what it is made of and ask to see it in daylight. Wool, linen and silk are available but cost more than polyester blends.
  3. Agree everything in writing. Style, fabric, lining, number of pieces, price, deposit and the dates of each fitting.
  4. Be honest at the fittings. Sit, raise your arms and walk around. If it pulls or bags anywhere, say so; small changes are part of the service.
  5. Check the finish. Seams, buttons, buttonholes and the lining tell you more about quality than the shop front.

What it costs

Prices depend mostly on the fabric and on the shop. As a rough guide at the time of writing: a made-to-measure shirt from about $20–40, a dress from about $30–80 and a two-piece suit from about $100 to well over $300 in good wool. The cheapest offers usually mean the cheapest cloth and the fewest fittings.

Pick the shop yourself. Drivers and touts who “know a good tailor” often earn a commission that ends up in your price. Read recent reviews and visit two or three shops before you decide.

Shipping home and rainy days

Most established shops can ship your clothes home by post or courier, and keep your measurements on file so you can reorder later. If you travel in the rainy season, fittings are a perfect plan for a wet afternoon, alongside a cooking class or a lantern-making workshop. See our guide to the best time to visit Hoi An for when the rain comes.
