One of Asia’s great coastal roads
The Hai Van Pass winds over the mountains between Da Nang and Hue, with the sea far below on one side and jungle on the other. Made famous by a television motoring special, it is now best enjoyed on a guided tour, a private car with stops, or on the back of an Easy Rider motorbike on the way to the imperial city of Hue.
Three ways to cross: a day trip to Hue, an Easy Rider motorbike, or a private car between the cities.

Ride pillion behind an experienced local driver over the Hai Van Pass between Hoi An, Da Nang and Hue, stopping at viewpoints, beaches and villages. Your luggage can go ahead by car. A perfect-scoring way to travel between the two cities.

Most traffic and lorries use the Hai Van tunnel below, so the road over the pass is quiet and scenic. Hue is about 130 km from Hoi An.

The pass itself is about 20 km, but with stops a crossing from Hoi An to Hue takes five to eight hours.
It has sharp bends and changeable weather, so riding it yourself requires motorbike experience. With an Easy Rider or a driver it is safe and relaxing.
