The best day trips & experiences, compared
Hoi An is the perfect base for central Vietnam: the Golden Bridge, the Marble Mountains, the temples of My Son and the Hai Van Pass are all within a day trip, and the Old Town itself has lantern-lit boat rides, cooking classes and basket boats. This guide compares the best-rated tours for each, so you can plan your days without guesswork.
Most visitors combine a big day trip, an Old Town evening and one hands-on experience. Pick one of each and your stay is planned.
Ba Na Hills and the Golden Bridge, the Marble Mountains, My Son and Hue via the Hai Van Pass. Hotel pickup, a guide and most of a day.
A boat ride and a floating lantern on the river, ideally on a full-moon lantern festival night, or the Memories Show.
A cooking class, a coffee or lantern-making workshop and the basket boats of the coconut forest. Cheap, short and the highlight for many.
One standout per type, chosen by rating and number of reviews on GetYourGuide. Every destination page lists more options.

The most popular way to see Ba Na Hills from Hoi An or Da Nang. Hotel pickup, the long cable car up the mountain, the Golden Bridge held by giant stone hands, the French Village and Linh Ung pagoda, with a guide handling the queues. A long but easy day.

The classic half-day around Da Nang: the 67-metre Lady Buddha on the Son Tra peninsula, the caves and pagodas of the Marble Mountains and the eerie Am Phu “hell cave”. Choose a morning, afternoon or full-day version with Hoi An or Da Nang pickup.

Reach the Cham temples of My Son before the heat and the crowds (or in the soft evening light), with a guide, breakfast or snacks with Champa flavours and a traditional dance performance. The best-rated way to see the UNESCO site from Hoi An.

A short wooden-boat ride on the river past the lit-up Old Town, ending with a paper lantern you set on the water. Book it for the full-moon lantern nights or any evening; it is the one experience almost every visitor to Hoi An does.

The most-booked experience in Hoi An: a ride in a round bamboo basket boat through the water-coconut palms of Cam Thanh, with the famous spinning show by the boatmen and a go at crab fishing. Short, cheap and genuinely fun, and easy to combine with a morning in the Old Town.

Two hours in a small Old Town workshop learning how Vietnam drinks its coffee: phin-filter drip coffee, egg coffee, coconut coffee and salt coffee, made by you and tasted on the spot. A lovely rainy-afternoon activity and one of the highest-rated classes in town.

Three full days is the sweet spot. That gives you one big day trip, one half-day trip and time for the Old Town, the beach and an evening on the river.
With a fourth day, add Hue via the Hai Van Pass or, from March to September, the Cham Islands. See our full list of things to do in Hoi An.
Book the big trips for early in your stay. Central Vietnam has short, heavy rain showers, especially from September to December. If a trip is rained off, you still have days left to rebook.
February to April is the most comfortable season: dry, sunny and not yet hot. May to August is hot and sunny, the best time for the beach and the Cham Islands. September to December brings the rainy season and the occasional flood in the Old Town; tours still run on most days, but have a backup plan. Lantern nights take place all year, on the 14th day of every lunar month.
By number of bookings, the basket boat ride in the coconut forest and the Ba Na Hills Golden Bridge day trip are the two most popular. For a short stay, the most rewarding combination is one big day trip (Ba Na Hills or My Son), a cooking class and a lantern boat ride in the evening.
For Ba Na Hills, My Son sunrise tours and lantern boats on full-moon nights, booking a day or two ahead is wise in high season (February to August). Most tours on GetYourGuide can be cancelled for free up to 24 hours before.
Walking the streets is free, but a ticket is required to enter the Old Town area and its historic houses. At the time of writing the ticket for foreign visitors costs 120,000 VND and includes entry to several heritage buildings.
Three days is ideal: one for the Old Town and a cooking class or basket boat, one for Ba Na Hills, and one for My Son and the Marble Mountains. Add a day for Hue or the Cham Islands.
February to April for pleasant weather; May to August for heat and the beach; September to December is the rainy season with occasional floods.
Yes. My Son is about an hour away, so a sunrise or morning tour gets you back to Hoi An by lunchtime, leaving the afternoon and evening for the Old Town.
