Herb gardens, ducks and rice fields
Five minutes out of the Old Town, Hoi An turns green: rice paddies with buffalo, the herb gardens of Tra Que village, duck farms and fishing hamlets on the river. A countryside tour, by bike or at a farm, is the calmest and often the most memorable half day of a stay.
A farm experience and two well-reviewed bike tours through the villages around Hoi An.

A short, funny and very Hoi An experience on a farm among the rice fields: lead a flock of hundreds of ducks across the field, feed them and get the famous duck “foot massage”. Cheap, great for photos and a hit with children.

Check availabilityTra Que is a farming village about 3 km north of the Old Town, on the road to An Bang beach. For several centuries its families have grown herbs and greens, from basil and mint to lettuce and coriander, in neat raised beds fertilised with algae from the nearby river; the herbs supply many of Hoi An’s restaurants. Visitors can walk the beds, try hoeing and watering with two cans on a shoulder pole, and eat local dishes made with the herbs.
Most bike tours ride through or past Tra Que, and it is an easy 15-minute cycle on your own from the Old Town.
Go early: from 7 am the light is soft, the air is cool and farmers are in the fields. Wear a hat, sun cream and shoes you do not mind getting muddy. In the rainy season (October to December) lanes can be flooded; tours usually adapt the route. Travelling with children? See Hoi An with kids.
